The Opportunity
The International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law (IANGEL) is seeking an inspired feminist to help grow our global network for transformative gender justice. This 80% FTE position provides a flexible work schedule, good benefits, and a unique opportunity for leadership development and professional growth while advancing gender equality globally. The Deputy Director (DD) will work closely with our Executive Director (ED) to help guide, shape, and grow this dynamic women’s rights nonprofit, by developing and implementing key strategies to connect our development and communications with our programmatic work. The ideal candidate will be passionate about gender justice and have prior nonprofit development experience, experience working with lawyers, exceptional organizational and communications skills, and the ability to work effectively with the legal and human rights communities.
The DD will partner with our ED and other key leaders to develop and implement policies and procedures concerning finance, development, and communications. Duties include assisting the ED with the operations and management of IANGEL, including responsibility for securing funding, managing, and applying for grants, reporting to funders, and budget management. The DD will also assist in deepening IANGEL’s engagement with law firms and pro bono counsel, and in creating, managing, and executing an effective strategy to expand our network to support and advance equality initiatives for women and girls globally.
The work location is flexible, though the ability to occasionally meet in-person in the San Francisco bay area would be helpful. Currently, due to COVID19, employees are all working remotely.
About IANGEL
Founded in 2013, IANGEL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to harnessing the power of pro bono legal services and connecting it to the cause of gender equality and justice. We operate by mobilizing our network to provide pro bono legal support to organizations, communities, and individuals locally, nationally, and around the world. IANGEL is expanding the concept of pro bono work to secure human rights for women and girls through pro bono engagement, research and analysis, education, and advocacy in the areas of reproductive justice, peace & security, and women’s and girls’ empowerment. IANGEL does not provide direct legal services.
IANGEL is based in the San Francisco Bay area, with board members in four states and the UK, and a network of partner organizations and volunteers extending across the United States and around the world.
Key Responsibilities
Development and Communications
The DD will advance, implement, and manage IANGEL’s development and communications.
Development duties include:
- Developing and implementing, in collaboration with the ED and Board, strategic organizational initiatives to meet revenue goals, cultivate new prospects, and increase overall funding.
- Developing and implementing donor stewardship strategies and processes.
- Overseeing the planning, coordination, and implementation of all fundraising campaigns, including events, committee meetings, communications and progress reports.
- Managing IANGEL’s overall donor pipeline; identifying and cultivating major gift prospects to meet fundraising goals.
Communications duties include:
- Creating and implementing a strategic development and communications plan.
- Developing an annual calendar for all communications including email marketing and social media.
- Overseeing design, production and distribution of annual reports, newsletters, and other outreach materials.
- Managing communications with existing donors and helping create and implement a plan to grow our donor base.
- Engaging IANGEL’s dedicated Board of Directors in resource development.
Assist in Building and Sustaining Programmatic Work
The DD will help the ED manage IANGEL projects, ensuring IANGEL maintains and deepens engagement within the legal community, and connects effectively with volunteers and project partners to accomplish its mission.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of programs, including projects with domestic and international partner organizations, special events, and co-sponsored events.
- Develop key metrics for evaluating and deepening the organization’s impact through its programming and advocacy efforts promoting gender equality.
Board Support and Operations Duties
The DD will help the ED manage IANGEL operations, including administrative oversight and financial management and will serve as the secondary liaison to the Board of Directors and Advisory Board.
- Ensure efficient functioning of board committees through oversight of scheduling, agendas, minutes, and actions.
- Ensure that information about IANGEL programs and campaigns is communicated clearly and effectively to board members.
- Work with the ED, bookkeeper, and accountant to develop and implement internal administrative, financial and personnel policies as appropriate.
- Oversee the work of the Administrative Assistant in monthly financial data entry and reconciliation, and work with the bookkeeper and accountant to ensure quarterly financial reports and tax preparation documents are accurate.
- Utilizing our donor management software to run reports, queries, and mailing lists as advised by the ED and Board, create, and track special event fundraising goals and attendance, and update and maintain records as necessary.
Other Duties as assigned by the ED.
Qualifications
- Passion for gender justice and talent for innovation, leadership, and collaboration.
- Experience in nonprofit development with knowledge of fundraising principles.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to make effective and persuasive verbal and written presentations to volunteers, sector peers, board members, donors, and others.
- Ability to assess fundraising and communication needs and activities, develop a plan, and implement a long-term strategy.
- Experience with fundraising events, as well as donor solicitation, maintenance, and cultivation.
- Ability to work with efficiency, flexibility and good humor.
- Experience with grant writing and management preferred.
- Background in law and human rights work, connections with the legal community, and understanding of pro bono legal services a plus.
- Strong tech skills, including expertise with Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Mailchimp, and Google Drive, and capacity to learn and manage new systems; experience with WordPress, QuickBooks and Neon CRM a plus.
- Some travel and flexibility in working hours for board meetings and events are required.
Compensation
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, ranging from $35,000 to $45,000 for this 80% FTE, exempt position (32 hours/ week on average), with generous paid time off, holidays, and health insurance benefits.
