COVID-19 has heightened the prevalence of what’s being called the shadow pandemic, gender-based violence (GBV). Survivors of GBV need uninterrupted and even expanded access to legal rights and protections right now. That’s why we’re developing a new initiative focused on addressing COVID-specific impacts on survivors and how as a community we can step up to meet these heightened needs.

IANGEL congratulates UC Davis Professor Karima Bennoune on her Endowed Chair Appointment and inaugural lecture “International Law & Women’s Rights – Building the Global Jurisprudence of Sex Equality.” Ms. Bennoune is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on cultural rights and author of “Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here – Untold Stories of the Fight Against Muslim Fundamentalism.”
Though we are disappointed to not meet and work with our colleagues from around the world this week at the UN, we are also encouraged and inspired by this extraordinary feminist speech given by the Secretary-General António Guterres titled “Women and Power.”
