In 2008, Manuela suffered an obstetric emergency and was rushed to the hospital, where she was confronted by hostile physicians that accused her of self-inducing an illegal abortion. The Trial Court convicted Manuela and sentenced her to 30 years in prison for aggravated murder. Learn more about Manuela’s story.

Child marriages in India are fairly common. According to UNICEF, South Asia is home to the largest number of child brides. The Covid-19 pandemic, which has caused significant economic hardship, has only worsened this situation.
Climate Change and Cultural Extinction: a Human Rights Crisis
The climate crisis permeates almost every aspect of human life. From rising temperatures to loss of entire communities and territories, the climate crisis affects humanity as a whole. Its impacts however are more pervasive on those living in vulnerable conditions. Low-lying small islands, indigenous peoples, rural people, women and girls, persons with disabilities, and those living in poverty are among the already marginalized communities that face the dire consequences of climate change.

Comment on Proposed Rule to End Gender-Based Asylum
Earlier this year IANGEL submitted a public comment, written by legal intern Zoya Chakourski, opposing an asylum rule proposed by several United States departments that nearly obliterates the ability to obtain gender-based asylum. You can read and download the full comment here.
