In March 2016, IANGEL attended the 60th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York City. IANGEL delegates included IANGEL Director, Mary Wolverton, Executive Director Cecilia Lipp, and 2016 Legal Program Intern Anam Haque. Held annually in New York City, the UNCSW delegates from the United Nations, its agencies and member states, discussed reaching the sustainable developmental goals as they relate to the status of women. During these two weeks there are also parallel and side events which can be hosted by any country, territory or non-governmental organization.

PanelistsIANGEL hosted a panel discussion as a parallel event, “Pro Bono Legal Resources for Women’s Empowerment“. In IANGELs recent publication Pro Bono Legal Resources for Human Rights: Essential Work for the Public Good, IANGEL calls for firms to reexamine the definition of pro bono.  Panelists at the event included Aisha Rahman, Executive Director for KARAMAH, Seth Earn, Legal Advisor for Aids Free World, and IANGEL Director Mary Wolverton. IANGEL’s Executive Director, Cecilia Lipp, moderated the 1.5-hour long panel and discussion.  The panelists engaged a packed room of attendees, which included lawyers, activists and government representatives. Everyone was interested in learning how to engage pro-bono legal services for women’s rights in their respective countries.

Next years 61st UNCSW conference can not come soon enough for IANGEL! Please join us at UNCSW61 in 2016!
